Error changing "groups"

I'm getting this odd error when trying to create a user: Error changing "groups"

truss indicates a line in /etc/group and I have a feeling it's to do with lines being too long or something. I managed to resolve it on a system cloned from this one but not until I deleted all the long lines in /etc/group.

Anyone come across this? How do I find the exact line causing the problem??

Sorted. There was a ':' missing after one of the group names.
