I am working in PageMaker 7.0 and just about finished my manual for a class I will be teaching in 2weeks that needs to be sent to print. The downside is that when I went to open the file it read: Can't open with a yield sign. I desparetly need this file to open. All other files work so it is not the install. I have been working on this particular manual for months and it would take me months to rewrite it. I have no back-up copies on disk or cd (lesson learned!) If anyone has received this message before and know a work-around. I will be extremely grateful.

I assume you are trying to open your file on the same machine which created it? If trying to open it on a different machine, is it possible that it has an older version of PM (such as 6.5) installed? Although PM is backwards compatible, an older version cannot usually open a file created in a newer version (unless deliberately saved backwards).

Can you copy the file in Windows Explorer to disk or CD and see if another computer (with the same version of PM) can open it?

I am not quite sure what you mean by a 'yield' sign. An exclamation mark perhaps?

First, read the link below about troubleshooting a damage doc:
Hopefully you will be able to repair the doc.

Second.. always, always, always have back up copies. When a PM doc becomes damaged, it most often occurs when you are closing the doc and it is being written to disk. You will not know it was damaged until, as you have found, you try to open it.

To make sure you do everything possible to eliminate the possible, please read my FAQ on the subject:
When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

Yes, unfortunately that is what happened....it did not finish writing to disk. I tried numerous techniquest to get this file open. I had programmer friends try to help me find the damaged portioned...no luck. Any Adobe techniques do not work because I cannot get any part of the file open. It opens but with no file showing on the screen.
I appreciate the help and the replies. I tried sending it to all different versions, trying to open it in another format, but no luck.

Again,

Thanks for the help!

If anyone knows any other tricks for error 8009:16404, that would be great.

Faytal, open pagemaker, then minimize the screen so that only very little of the window is showing below the menu bar... then try to open the doc in that window... sometimes if a graphic is causing the problem, you can open the doc that way and then go to Edit> Edit Story and fix things or at least salvage some of it. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.
