Specs: 2 Dell PowerEdge 1550 Servers w/Windows 2K Advanced Server, MS SQL 2000, MS Exchange 2000 and running Veritas Backup Exec 8.5 with 1 HP DLT40 and 1 HP DLT70.

Everything was working decent, well, as good as Veritas can work until just about two days ago. I rebooted my backup server, which is a Win 2K Pro machine, and ever since Backup Exec has not worked. Just as a side note, nothing new was added to the machine, it was just being moved into another rack.

The error I get is "Unable to initialize Remote Agent for Windows 2000/NT." After searching Veritas Support, I found about 40000 documents, with most of them being completely worthless in solving the problem.

I've done the three registry hacks, reinstalled both my Agents and the Backup Exec itself, tried the lower priority settings, added the one System State hotfix and yes, all of my services are using the DOMAIN\backupexec account and the account is set with all of the proper permissions.

Does ANYONE have ANYTHING else I can try? With over $2,000 invest in Backup Exec and all of the agents, moving to another solution isn't quite feasible for us. On top of it, Veritas wants another $100+ dollars just to talk with me... They can kiss my [enter favorite term] here.

All of your thoughts and help will be GREATLY appreciated!

If you already tried the addedToRNR registry hack to no avail. Then install the AppleTalk protocol on the Backup Exec server and then disable it by deselecting (remove the checkmark) for the protocol in network properties. Then try the backup again.

Been there, done that. Thanks for the response though.

Well surprise...

After coming in this morning, rebooting the machine again, it works again. Veritas Backup Exec is the FLAKIEST piece of software I've ever used.

It is pretty sad that most backup software out there sucks. Sorta makes you wish Microsoft would put a little more effort into NTBackup, doesn't it?

NTBackup is a watered down version of Backup Exec.

No, it's not really. NTBackup is even made with different programming language! Sebastian Jazzer

JazzGeek,

[tab]Are you sure? I don't have access to an NT right now but it seems to me that if you go to "help" and "about", you get Veritas' copyright. I know this is true on my W2K.
