While there was a helpful post on older hardware that pointed me in the right direction, the solution is slightly different with newer hardware. I have DSL service from Windstream with a Speedstream 4200 modem and Linksys WRT54G (Firmware Version: v8.00.2). The modem was an upgrade which broke my VPN. The key from previous posts was to have the Router do the PPPoE authentication rather than the modem.
It took me a week and 4 techs at Windstream to get the modem configured in bridge mode so I could logon from the router. The next post includes the steps.
Dan

Plug the computer straight into modem. Reboot if necessary.
Logon to speedstream modem 192.168.254.254:
Logon name admin
Default password admin
Go to This will prompt you to reboot the modem and put it in bridge mode. After reboot, plug computer into router; and plug the router into the modem.
Change modem from DHCP to PPPoE and enter logon credentials.
Save Settings.
Go to status page and verify that you are connected.
Reboot computer to renew DHCP and flush DNS cache.
You should now have a working solution for VPN. :-D

Correction:
The line: Change modem from DHCP to PPPoE and enter logon credentials.
Should read: Change router from DHCP to PPPoE and enter logon credentials.
