Suddenly getting this error when trying to send e-mails. It has been working untouched for years. No changes made here. Tried different machines, different operating systems, different e-mail clients... They all come up with the same error when sending. Receiving is fine. If I put in a fictitious e-mail address, e.g. fred@bloggs.co.uk it works fine, but the legitimate address always fails now.

I am sure my ISP (Tiscali) must be blocking it although they categorically deny doing so. How do I prove it? Anyone found a solution?

Hi, Roger

Well that error usually means either your From: email address is unacceptable (i.e. doesn't end in @tiscali.co.uk or another of the domain names acceptable to them OR you are using a Reply TO: email address which is on their blacklist OR your SMTP settings are incorrect.

Per their website their settings are completely ordinary - no SSL on send and SMTP server does not require validation. The fact you get a normal bounce on an invalid destination suggests yours are OK - they are checking that first (at RCPT TO time).

I assume you are not using a different email address as a reply to. If you are then try a test without one.

So they may inded be blocking you. Many ISPs won't tell you if that is the case - they just don't want to accept your mail and don't want the hassle of explaining/justifying.

Maybe time to get a gmail account and send via them with reply-to set to your tiscali.co.uk address since you can still receive there OK.

Thanks Jock. I probably wasn't as clear in my post as I could have been...

Take Outlook. The problem is with the User Information E-mail address. Problem is still there whether or not I put in a Reply address. I have several e-mail addresses with different ISPs. Currently, it is just one that is now "blocked" by Tiscali.

As regards gmail, as I understand it this is a webmail facility. I want to use a client like Outlook or Eudora etc. - don't think that's comaptible is it?

Hi Roger

Your user name email address must be OK, since you are able to pick up inbound mail.

The E-mail address field in User Information is normally that same email address for any server where you login is your email address, as is the case with your ISP. The reply to email address is found on the More Settings button, and that is where you should put any email address you want to receive replies.

It is normal for them to block email addresses in the User Information field which are not in a domain they allow, but that should get you a relaying denied rejection.

Regarding gmail = they also support mail delivery via POP3/SMTP, though the setup is non-standard:

POP3 server: pop.gmail.com
SMTP server: smtp.gmail.com
Email address and user name are both your gmail address.
Password is your gmail password
Outbound server requires authentication same as inbound server.
POP3 server uses port 995 and requires SSL
SMTP server uses port 465 and requires SSL.

Thanks for the info on GMAIL. I've made a note of all those settings, in case I decide to go with them.

On another machine, in Outlook 2003 I've been putting another of my e-mail addresses into the User Information field, which is different to that of the Logon Information field! Never used the Other User Information field before. Maybe that's due for blocking at any time soon as well... [sad]

I'm not sure why, but checking the "my outgoing server requires authentication" box under "more settings" in Email Accounts worked to fix this problem for me today.
