WinXP SP2 - I.E 6.01 - Outlook Express

When I try to change the font of a "reply" (Format/font), this is the error I get. I tried Thunderbird (didn't like it), and didn't have the problem. Don't know when it started, I know changing the font used to work.

Sounds like file corruption, try reinstalling Outlook Express...

Hope this helps,

Jay Franklin - Fgn.nx@sympatico.ca - E-mail me if you must.

First thing I tried - re-installed I.E. from SP2 CD.

Hehe... Try contacting Microsoft...

Seriously, if you want something stable you should try to adjust to Thunderbird...

Jay Franklin - fgn.nx@sympatico.ca

Actually I did try Thunderbird, didn't like it. However, fonts worked OK, that's how I knew it is a O.E. problem.

Yep, it's the best out on the net...

Very stable...

Bill, that didn't help. It describes a different problem "unknown error" (for tcp/ip problems). Mine just says: Error 501
Permission Denied

I am sole user/administrater.

I don't need permission! My computer! My computer! <grin>

Try contacting Microsoft...

It's your best chance on solving the problem.

Bill, that link describes a repair for "Security" on NTFS, I'm using Fat32.

jayfranklin, went ahead and e-mailed MicroShaft - shall I hold my breath?

Until Monday. Most of the Microfolks are not in the office.

But go ahead and send your own query with my second link.

Best wishes,
Bill

Are "Microfolks" related to the Keebler "Elves"?

Hey - it's been an exausting last few days!

micker377,

They are normal flesh and blood humans, despite their reputation.

As an MS-MVP I deal with them daily it seems at times, but overall just a really great group of people.

The IE team is always swamped with questions. So you have to be a little nice about an IE question.

I know you now how to use IEFix, and setting the option for sfc /Scannow seems wise. I just want to make sure the font is in fact there.

I would be very interested if using notepad and changing fonts raises the same issues. There is a lot of malware doing notepad.exe replacements at the moment as a vector.

Bill

I was just kidding about Microsoft service. They are good. You take a million computers and a million different cards, and they are supposed to make it work? I had a problem a few years ago with Win98, it took 5 or 6 e-mails and 2 hrs. on the phone to find a duplicate dll.

I already ran IEFix and SFC. NotePad works fine (as does MS Word). I guess I'll wait to see if MS has any solution. I down loaded I.E.6 and will try (next week) a complete re-install of first O.E., and if no help all of I.E.6.

What bothers me is the 501 error. I do not see a direct link between a font change and this particular error.

But see, for example:
To me, this is a DNS resolution error independent of a font change.

I do not doubt you, it just does not make a lot of sense why this particular error show be thrown by IE.

That's why I am confused also. I don't even get to select from the font page, as soon as I click on the Font (format > font), I get the error box. A few more things I have found: when the error box pops up, I can move it, and behind it is the regular box with the size and style colums shown, but no fonts are listed. Also (although I don't see any connection), on options > cleanup it shows: "total files listed 0", and "wasted space 0%".

Odd.

I hope Microsoft gives you a clean answer. I am curious still.

If I see something that seems germane to the issue I will of course post it.

Best Holiday wishes to you micker377,
Bill Castner

I have run into the same problem. However in my situation, the FORMAT toolbar in OE allows me to change fonts etc.

I do not have a solution to the original problem which I now share.
