I am trying to give access to another user via a network to a database when she tries to open it we get an error 5009 "couldn't open database...." does anyone know the cause of this or the fix. She is on a newer version of approach than I am. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

This is normally a permissions problem. Make sure the user has full access (read, write, create, delete) to the shared folder containing the dbfs.

Is there any way to connect Approach database with read/write password protection through ODBC as well as MS Access 97 or higher? I tried to connect such kind of db with MS Access connection wizard, but it return and error and said "Couldn't open an encryed database". Thank in advance.

Another cause of the -5009 error is not having the path to the original database location available on the current computer. For example, if you originally had your databases on a network drive connected as G: and decided to change it to R: then opening the APR on R would not find its databases because G is no longer a valid drive/path.

The "work around" for this is to temporarily connect a device or network drive as G: so that the path is valid that far. Then Approach will not find the databases and either "find" them in the same folder as the APR or ask you to point to them.

suesloan,

Every apr I develop for clients has dbfs located on drive N:, which is mapped to a share on a server and therefore these paths are saved in every apr. I send most aprs/dbfs to the client by e-mail. I doubt many clients have a drive N and nobody has ever had a -5009 when opening one of those aprs. Either the dbfs are in the same folder and Approach uses them without prompting or they aren't and Approach propmpts for substitutes.
