Installed Apache 1.3.23 on Win 98 machine. Apache runs okay in Console window, but when I try accessing localhost or 127.0.0.1 in browser it returns Error 403, telling me I don't have right to access it.

I've repeated the same installation on Windows ME and all seems to work. Is there something I need to do different on Windows 98?

Hi,

As far as I know, there is virtually no difference with the win32 installs on any platform (except that you can run it as a service on NT/W2K/XP and you can't in 9x/ME. ) Very little goes anywhere near the registry and all the config options are in the httpd.conf file. You could always try that favorite Windows troubleshooting technique known as reinstalling. :-D

More seriously, have you got the M$ personal web server (PWS) or IIS (?) installed because that could cause a conflict with apache. To test if its a problem with port 80 like that you could add another 'Listen' line to the httpd.conf file - e.g. :

Listen 80
Listen 81

then try
Hope this helps

Thanks wullie & ifincham for your replies - it was the conflict with PWS that caused it. Listen 81 fixed it
