I am running NT 4 Server SP6 and ArcservIT 6.61.

When I run the backup job on my Exchange server I get the Arcserv error :Error 3421 EC = Unable to Open Registry Keys".

The rest of the job finishes without any problems and, in fact, the end message is Backup Operation Successful.

I looked up the error on CAs support site and everything suggested there seems to be in order on my system. This error just started a few days ago and I never changed any of my configurations on either Arcserv or Exchange.

Here is a copy of my error from the ArcServ log file:

2337 D3421 Unable to open the registry key. (KEY=SAM\SAM, EC=ACCESS DENIED)

20020813 194234 2337 D3421 Unable to open the registry key. (KEY=S-1-5-21-1783894057-1697862350-1846952604-1012\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider\S-1-5-21-1783894057-1697862350-1846952604-1012, EC=ACCESS DENIED)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Access denied. Make sure the username your using has full rights at three levels, act as part of the OS, log on as a service, and log on locally. Then make sure that you use this account as the ARCserve system account (found in arcserve admin console).

If it's remote make sure your using a domain admin or what not.

It sound like authentication....

Thanks ARCserveGuru. I checked my settings as outlined in these instructions on the CA website. Unforunately, I still get the same error. This article refers to checking
the rights on the registry as well and make sure there are no restrictions applied to the Registry Keys.

Is this the registry of the server being backed up? Where would I check these settings?

Contents of Arcserve Article below:

PROBLEM: E3421 Unable to open the registry key.

RESOLUTION: Make sure the ARCserve System account is a member of Domain Admins- set as the primary Windows NT account, Administrators, and Backup Operators. Add the three advanced user rights of Act as part of the operating system, Logon locally, and Logon as a service. Launch Windows NT Explorer, go to the ARCserve directory, highlight, right , mouse click , and choose sharing. Make sure the directory is shared as ARCserve$, and that the ARCserve system account has Full Control. Remove the everyone group. Check the rights on the registry as well and make sure there are no restrictions applied to the Registry Keys.

From the names of the registry values, its probable that Microsoft does not want those entries to be touched. Unless you need to restore individual Registry keys, I would skip backing that up and just do the System State.

This will save on database growth as well.

Thanks jabus, but I am not sure what you mean by System State.

When I am creating/modifying the job I am selecting the box beside Registry in the tree. This backups all the keys. What would I select for System State?
