I started getting this message in my backup activity logs about 3 weeks ago even though nothing in the system, vis-a-vis the backup software installation, changed. Data is nevertheless backed up. Also, I only receive this message on the root domain controller (only 2 out of the 4 dc's we have backup the domain).
_____________
Error 3081

Unable to backup system state for remote machines. (MACHINE).

Explanation: Backup and Restore of System State for remote machines can be done only via teh Client agent for Windows NT/2000.

Cause/Solution: If the node was backed up using the Windows 2000 agent, Install Windows 2000 Agent on that remote machine Go through Client/Agents/Windows 2000 agents to select the System State of the remote machine and submit the restore job.

___________
I do have Client Admin Agent installed on all the machines and have also stopped and restarted the Client Agent Admin service. This was to no avail.

IDEAS?? :)

to backup remote system state client agent has to be installed,is client agent installed and functioning properly?

Client agent is installed. How do I check if it is functioning properly. I have only verified the service was running (as I mentioned above). Other ideas?

:)

The client agent has it's own activity log (found under the agent directory) and a debug mode (which is enabled via the registry). The activity log in debug should tell you what you want to know.

Hmmnn.. thanks for this. On the main menu I have the following options: File, View, Options Help

Under View:- Only Status Bar is enabled
Under Options:- I see Configuration, Services and Proactive Backup (which is disabled but it was always disabled from when I installed the software and I never had this problem that I am having now).

On the icons menu I see a garbage pan where I can delete the log files however I don't see where I can view these log files.

Is there a setting I need to enable?

to put client agent in debug mode do the following on the remote machine:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ComputerAssociates\BrightStor ARCserve Backup\ClientAgent\Parameters

- Double click on the value Debug.
The DWORD editor will popup, change Data: 0 to 1.
Other acceptable data values = 2, 3, 4 (higher value generating the most detail in the log)
Result: more detail will appear in the agent.log file located where the agent was installed

Note:
1-You need to do a backup of the remote machine to
get the log generated.

2-Disable the debuging after you finish the above test otherwise you will get alot of unnessery warnings.

To view the log you have to go to the agent directory and open the file directly.
