After attempting to compact a database on a 3.5 to take back to office, a 'not enough room' message appeared and I clicked okay. Later, I cannot get into the form and the message is 'operation canceled by user.' I cannot even open up design view. Is there a way to open this form and get rid of the message. Obviously, from now on I compact on my hard drive and move to my 3.5, right? I've designed about 4 databases that are used on networks, but I've never had this problem before. I'm access literate and capable, but am not totally knowledgeable. more i learn, less i know.

My opinion:

Never do any "work" on a floppy disk.

Always copy files onto and from floppies using windows explorer, and NOT the program "save-as" option.

Avoid using floppies whenever possible; use email instead.
Your hard drive is safer than a floppy disk.

People who didn't "grow up" with floppy disks are unaware of the effect that MAGNETS can have on the files. Having a magnet, or even a magnetized credit/ID card in your purse with a floppy is bad.

If you're putting very important files on floppy, make sure you format the floppy first, and ensure that there are NO bad sectors. (Put floppy in, open My computer, right-click floppy drive, hit format.)

Access files:

Before transporting, storing, emailing, whatever, always repair and compact your DB. Access creates a temporary file whenever you open a database, called databasename.ldb, in the same location as the database. This would take up room on a floppy. Also, when you repair and compact, it makes an extra copy of the database in the same location. Bad idea on a floppy...

Thanks. Actually, I did grow up with floppies and do realize the magnetic thing, so am very careful that way. Is it the same for Zips? Have never really heard how bad that is. I've never attached a db to an email before. Are there any specific problems you might run into or any special way to do it?

Because databases can bloat, just make sure you repair/compact before you email so it's in its smallest form.

Zips? I've heard that the zip drives go bad and ruin the zip disks, but I don't know anyone who ever specifically had this problem, and I haven't seen the problem around for a long time.

Thanks for your help. I emailed Friday and worked on it over the weekend and emailed it back. And it still works!!
