error 25 Shadow copy

We are having an odd issue with our 3 tier web based application that houses its data in SQL. We are experiencing an error 25 and subsiqent blue screen on the SQL: server.... the error code that suggests the Shadow copy service is ill effecting us. WE DO NOT USE Shadow copy. The service is set to manual...there are no back up jobs touching this server during this time frames we're seeing issues.... 10:30 pm.... We changed our SQL table indexing from 10:30 to 11:30 and the server became stable. What caused this error event id 25? I read there is a patch for these symptoms.... but before we lay the patch I am trying to find out the underlying reason for the server to freeze.
