Error 21776 DBO was not found ........

I have three different servers running SQL 7.0. This morning I have discovered that this error pops up any time I try to open the properties of the 'sa' user account. It will not allow me to change the password. I have read the article Q218172 from MS. The article explained the cause as being a restore to a server where the 'dbo' does not exist. I have not restored anything. This just started appearing. I have worked around the problem but would like to know what might have caused it.
