Error 2140 - An Internal Windows NT Error Occurred

I'm trying to start the Mercator Event Server 5.0 service on \\(servername) and each time I received this message:-

" Could not start the Mercator Event Server 5.0 service on \\(servername).
Error 2140: An internal Windows NT error occurred."

Should I reinstall the Mercator service registry?

I had a similar problem and got that error message. The MS site wasn't much help. My problem was with ArcServ2000 on an Exchange server and the internal tape drive wasn't being recognized. Any time I went to tape devices and hit detect device, I'd get that error message. What I ended up doing was a repair/reinstall on the ArcServ2000 software and then a reboot of the machine. That solved it.
