In trying to install an update to Office 2000 Professional on a Windows XP Media Center Edition SP3 system, it tells me that there is no copy of Office installed even though there is (a legitimate one, I might add). I tried doing a repair through the Add/Remove Programs panel but after going through the process it gives
and then backs out of the update.
I've search on-line and found a number of possible solutions, some directly from Microsoft, yet none seem to work! According to Microsoft, the problem is related to two system files, fpencode.dll and possibly fp4autl.dll, and instructs to replace them using copies from the i386 folder, which I did to no avail.
One other possible solution is to run the sfc /scannow command. However, sfc does not appear to be part of this system's Windows installation.
An alternate suggestion is to run the Windows installation CD and reinstall Windows but as this is an OEM version that came preinstalled, there is no disk to run.
Yet another involves disabling certain services but the instructions indicate disabling things that are not there. Similarly, a registry tweak indicates entries that do not exist.
All that said, has anyone else experienced this problem and do you know of a work-around?
Thanks!
