Anything else in the log prior to that message? Are you encountering any problems such as unscheduled shutdowns or difficulty starting the SQL Service?

There was a shutdown request just prior to this message. Wondering if SS didn't have enough time to write to the event log before the system powered down.
I suspect you are correct. I found a number of news group messages about error 1717. Nearly all were associated with a shutdown. No one in the news groups seems to know why this would occur. I don't have an answer but if SQL Server is running okay after restarting, you can probably ignore the message.
