Error 116 in numerous sites

We have software that uses a Pervasive SQL 2000i Workgroup Engine database, and in the last three days we have numerous sites complaining about an Error code 116, which is causing the software to fall over randomly. All sites are set up basically the same.

- Windows 2000 only network
- One Windows 2000 Server running the WGE, and has the gateway assigned to it permanantly
- Multiple Windows 2000 Professional clients running the WGE
- All Service Pack 4/4 for Win2K and Pervasive.

To our knowlege nothing has changed, been installed, or anything like that would cause these errors to suddenly occur on seperate, unrelated sites. These seperate sites don't share data or anything like that, they just have the same setup physical / software setup.

Any ideas on what could be done to troubleshoot the problem, or what could be causing it?

The 116 usually indicates that the various engines cannot communicate properly. First, check the PVSW.LOG to make sure that there's nothing in there. Second try to run PSA and run the network test. Then run the transactional and relational tests. Third, try the Function Executor to open the same file from at least two machines (this will simulate the application to rule it out as the cause).

We were thinking it might be caused by the Welchia worm - we got hit pretty hard with it, and although we have run the removal tools and patched the PCs, it appears that its TFTP Server remains on some of the PCs trying to infect either itself or other hosts; we aren't entirely sure. (Removal tool considers the TFTP server to be a valid application, or so we believe).

Since the PCs are all on local 10/100 networks, for a communications error to occur it would have to be something like this I would assume - something flooding the network.

A network flood could possibly cause these but I would still check the PVSW.LOG and the PSA communication test. I haven't heard of any worms causing Btrieve to not communicate.
