hi there,

I cannot start the SQL Service Agent. When I select Start in Enterprise
Mgr.,
I
get error 1056 (an instance is already running). But the Service Manager
shows
that it is not running (a red colored box for the agent instead of a green
arrow). The status bar says it is stopping.

If I try to stop SQL Server, the Service Mgr. asks if I also want to stop
all
dependent services. I select Yes, but then I get error 1061, The Agent
cannot
accept control messages at this time.

Open the Task Manager and try to terminate the Service from there. Another option is to reboot the server.

Sometimes a job can cause the SQLAgent to hang. Make sure none of the jobs run a program that displays a Windows dialog or message box. Also, make sure no programs executed by SQL Agent jobs requests user input. Terry L. Broadbent - DBA
