Error 1056-database engine wont start

My Arcserve Advanced edition is showing error 1056, "Failed to start database engine" I am unable to start it manually, the database prune job is active, it runs for a while then goes to "On Hold"
Short of reinstalling, is there any way to fix this?

kill Dbeng.exe & rds.exe from the Task Manger if it gives any error use the kill.exe which is comes with resource kit
use the command kill -f PID
it looks you have problem with your database check if there any files in Temp folder which is in Arcserve folder
if there are any files with .CAT then run mergecat.exe

Install Arcserve on another machine then replace database folder from the life server and put the new one from the test server this should give you a clean database ,always
keep a copy of empty database with you and if you have any problem just repalce it with the empty one.

The kill utility did its job, I managed to stop the 2 processes and the database Prune operation has now finished, Arcserve seems OK
Looking in the Temp folder there are a few .cat files, I ran mergecat but your suggestion about restoring a clean database folder is a good one I will try this later
