Error 10038: Socket operation on non-socket

When installing a wireless NIC on my (Win98) laptop, all seems well for the installation part. After rebooting, windows comes with the error message: Error 10038: Socket operation on non-socket. the connection with the wireless access point is active; I can ping bith the access point and addresses on the internet. But but when I try to make a telnet or a http connection to any address, it fails.
Any clues or hints on how to solve this or where to look?
