Hi all,

Can someone please tell me how to erase the contents of a tape on a box running Solaris 8? I tried

mt -f /dev/rmt/0 erase

This ran for a long time. However, ater I rewound the tape and issued a

ufsrestore tf /dev/rmt/0n >> contents.out

all of the files originally on the tape were lifted. It looks like nothing was erased. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

Are you sure the tape was fully rewound before you erased it?

If you habitually use /dev/rmt/0n it probably wasn't (the "n" meaning "no rewind after access").

If you want to really obliterate the data on the tape you could write a continuous loop of rubbish onto it.
