Erasing tape

Messing around a bit today ... I found an old(ish) tape, and issued an mt erase over 3 hours ago ... it's still going :-(

Is this normal? (It's a DLT 4000, so could be 20/40/70Gb tape).

yes, it would appear to be. Man entry for mt -erase is:

erase Erase the entire tape. Erasing a tape
may take a long time depending on the
device and/or tape. Refer to the device
specific manual for time details.

Sorry about that. My internet connection went down in the middle of posting and I assumed it hadn't completed.
