erasing 4mm DDS media 1

I am trying to erase a tape which has been used on another backup software, I am unsure whether it is arcserve or NT. I can not erase the media no matter what I do it fails to erase with differing errors from crc errors to simple bad media. Is there a generic way of erasing any media regardless. I am in a situation where I know that the data is not required and therefore formatting/erasing the tape is all I want to do. I then want to be able to use it with backup exec.

Have you tried reasing the tape with NT Backup?
