First, you have to realise that because Illustrator is a vector based program, the eraser works differently to other software, such as Photoshop, so at first it seems unintuitive.
You can only erase part (or all) of a single path at a time, and overlapping objects are unaffected. The two main ways of using it are:
1) Draw an arc around the area you want erased.
2) Scribble over the path as if you're using a real eraser.
The second option is usually the more intuitive.
Other options besides the eraser tool include selecting and deleting an object, selecting individual anchor points and deleting them, using the pathfinder (especially useful for when the objects contain a fill colour), the scissors and knife tools.
