Era/Period Function in Date Editor 2

What does the era/period function do in the date format editor? You can select either short or long era/period. I have tried using it but nothing happens. Is it something to do with a different calendar other than the Gregorian one?

Some calendars, such as Japanese and Taiwanese, support the notion of 'era'. For example, the Japanese calendar counts the year from the start of the reign of the current emperor. When installed on one of these operating systems, SCR7 provides three choices in the 'Calendar Type' list box.
