This seemed like the closest match, forum-wise, since it's "wiring closet", right? :)

A vendor just supplied us a quote for a full-height (42U) rack for routers and a couple servers. With sides, shelves, and PDUs, it came in at just under $3500 total.

It looks to be the top-of-line Compaq model they're quoting, which I think may be overkill.

What are your thoughts on this? What would you expect to pay for a free-standing full rackmount enclosure? Any other ideas on brands or sources?

Thanks!

You might try middle atlantic products ( as one source, though it may be on the high end as well.

Also Southwest Data has much of the same hardware at about 25% less usually.

The fully enclosed racks can be very spendy, you may want to consider assembling only the components (sides, doors, top, fans, shelves) that you need to keep the cost low.

Good Luck

It is only my opinion, based on my experience and education...I am always willing to learn, educate me!

Thanks daron -- I've never actually had to buy a rack so had no idea what the pricing should be. 3 grand seemed a lot for what we're looking to do.

I can call my buddy Bob at MAP and see if he'll make us a deal. :)

Yes 3500 definately sounds a bit high I would have expected a loaded enclosed rack about 1/2 that, check with some other vendors in your area for a non-install bid

Do you need a fully enclosed rack cabinet? If not for security or esthetics, how about a standard frame for ~$120?

If your not mounting larger servers, most people don't need 4 post racks... The only place I have 4 post racks is in my actual server room. Everywhere else I have 2 post telco racks for my switches, ups's and patch panels...

Mind you in a telco rack I have an APC2200 (3ru) and 1 4006 (7 or 9ru, can't remember) as long as you bolt the 2 post racks down and you secure the tops to ladder racks your just fine as long as you keep the weight down low...

When I do installs in a corporate building closet, I use a simple 19" steel or aluminum universal rack at a cost of a few hundred dollars.

For a data center floor, or for lock-ups, we sometimes use Great Lakes which may cost $1800+/-.

I'm with the consensus that if you do not need a cabinet, don't go with it. After installation service and add-ons becomes very cumbersome & time consuming. If your Telcom closet/room has the HVAC requirments & a lockable secured door go with properly supported racks.
