It is my understanding that the new switching exam will be only on IOS -based switches.

Anybody know what type of switches would get through the lab exercises?

Will I need a router that supports trunking such as 2620 -- or is all layer-3 routing now done within the switch.

Thanks

Bob

From what i remember, the new switching exam contains distribution layered multilayered switch (i.e. Cat6000) which no individual can afford. And access layered IOS based switch 2924XL. That'll cost around $350 used, which you may need more than one.

My recommendation.
The switching exam weighs more towards accessories and it's capabilities rather than troubleshootings and programmings.
Thus, spending your precious dollars on thoses expensive switches to strengthen lesser focused subjects may be the second best way to study.
I suggest, shop around varies of switches. I mean look around various internet sites like you really mean to buy them. Look at how may slots are available for each switches. That way you get the glimpse of latest switches available in the market.

What is supported and what is not?
Which switch does not support which protocols?
Do I really need to buy those route processors for my cat5000 or cat6000?
How may switches and what other equipment do i need to have valid CGMP/IGMP session?

While you are shopping with these kinds of question in mind, you'll be ready for the test in no time.

Of course, this does not mean do not study IOS commands. Know how do enable (and find differences between)
uplinkfast and portfast
vtp and spantree
MLS-RP and MLS-SE
HSRP and VRRP
802.10 and 802.1Q
these can be learnt more effieciently reading than executing.

Goodluck
