I am creating images in Illustrator and saving them as EPS files. Is there any way I can get the file size not to be so large?

what are you saving them to be used as? if you can, save as Illustrator files instead of eps. Otherwise, remove unnecessary layers (especially scanned templates) and data points (can use smart remove points feature under filter <objects> menu)

The files are being inserted into PageMaker and Word. The company requires that they be EPS. I have erased any unnecessary layers and I used the simplify path command which helped, but not enough. What is the smart remove points feature? I couldn't find it. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

What's the problem with large files? In order to print correctly from PM, there must be enough information in the file to do so. What version are you saving back to? PM7 requires that the EPS be saved back to V7 for best results. And note that not all versions of Word can accept an EPS file. Have you tried with yours?
