EPS File Size in AI CS

Hi,

I have a real basic image which is made up of 6 letters and 2 shapes.
The size = 30mm w x 13mm h
The colour is black with no shading etc. Real plain.
I need to save this as an EPS file, however when I save it the file size is 608kb!!!

I am a newbie to this, and after looking at a file which I have from somewhere else, which was done in Illustrator 8 - simmilar in nature in terms of size, and complexity (or lack thereof) - the size of this one is only 40kb

Can anyone shed any ideas on why the file is so large?

Is it because it is made up of mostly fonts - ie if I drew the fonts as lines would it be considerably smaller?

Any ideas on why this has happened, or how I can make it smaller is hugely appreciated.

Try converting your text to outlinesthen resave. You can also try exporting the file as a legacy 8 file and see if that brings the size down.

But to be honest the way graphics and computer storage is today the 608kb file is a small file in my world where single files can go 50 to 100 megs easily.

Newer versions of illustrator will have more features, which consequently equals a larger file. I would expect to never reach a file size that small with current versions of the software. If size is truly that much of an issue you can go through ans delete certain features you are not using (brushes, swatches, graphic styles, etc...). Creating outlines would probably create a bigger file. Exporting might do the same.

Removing the graphic styles, symbols and unused swatches while saving as a .ai file will yield the smallest file size.

Thanks everyone for your responses, however I have been on leave so havn't had a changce to respond sooner.

Anyhow, I know this type of thing can be made smaller, so am on the war path for any possibility that might make it smaller.
In this light, how to I turn off the graphic styles, symbols, swatches etc? *I had a hunt around but couldn't get anywhere*
I tried saving in a lower version - no different.
Also tried removing the text and just using outlines - no different either.

Any ideas are hugely appreciated.

You must delete them. They cannot be turned off.

delete them? Sorry for my ignorace, but how do I do this?

As I mentioned before, the image was made up of a couple of rectangles and some fonts. But I have traced these fonts, so that now the image is simply comprised of blocks of colour (all solid). If I delete these there will be nothing left of the image - or maybe this is the trick

It just amazes me how something so basic, is relativly large. Maybe I am just asking too much from this version (ie it is newer and has more complexity therefore the file size is vastly higher)?
