Dear All,

i want to learn the basics about switch configuration and therefore have now a NortelBaystack 350/12T switch at home with the original Nortel serial cable(9pin male to 25pin male).
Unfortunately my laptop does only have a EPP Port (Enhanced Parallel Port), no serial, no com. I got told its possible to buy "parallel to serial converters". Anyone having any experience with these (reliability, prices, comments...)? Otherwise i am thinking about buying a docking station

Thx in advance and kind regards
Asok

Personally I think you need a PC with a comm port. However...you could always borrow someone's laptop or take it somewhere and configure an IP address for management.

From then on you could just telnet to it or use Java Device Manager for management.

Yes,they work.Radio Shack or a local electronics store should have them.
I agree with dane775.

Have you got USB?
I use a USB to serial converter. Great thing is you can change it's "pin out" so you can flip between straight and null modem. i.e set up Cisco and Nortel on the same cable

i have also 2 baystack 450-24T with troubs.... first i miss that in term doesn't work "BACKSPACE" key... so i send 255.25.5.... as netmask
next one... i set 1/1-1/24 on vlanid 1 and and 2/5-2/8 ports on vlanid2
so i don't have set ANY PASSWORD, they works but i cannot manag then neither through Device manager (telnet) neither using db9 cable, very strange using this cable, i don't have any kind of response ftom Hyperterm, or any minicom apps
any 1 could help me?

Make sure you're using Hyperterm Private Edition 6.0...or that you're using XP (which comes with a newer version of Hyperterm).

Power clear the switches with your cable attached.

For Backspace not working, try CNTL & backspace.
