Hello community, this is my first post so please be kind. I recently graduated from a local community college with an associate in computer science: network administration. My classes were centered on Microsoft’s MCSE tests. I do plan on taking the MCSE and MCSA tests eventually but I need to do some studying before I attempt those. I also took classes modeled after the A+ exam and security + exam. I have been studying for the A+ test lately and hope to be ready around the end of July. I was kind of hoping to get a job and have my employer pay for the rather expensive MSCE exams. So my question is what tests besides A+ would be most beniffical in getting a entry level network tech, or computer tech job? Any advice would be greatly appreiacted.

In the long haul I plan on taking A+ Net+, Security + MCSA,MCSE and finishing up my CCNA ( I took and passed the 1st test in high school I think there are 2 parts also a good way to slap CISCO on the resume)

Thanks for any testing and career advice!!

Tim

It looks like you have a pretty good roadmap laid out. ain't nothing to it but to do it.

Tim,

Like Glister and Nike say - JUST DO IT !!!

Get that A+ and finish your CCNA - that should get you in the door as entry level computer/network tech.

If you take any other classes - try to take the exams as soon as possible after - the longer you wait - the less you remember so for lots of it you will be starting over !!

Just do it one at a time - do what you know best and move on to the next, if you took the 1st half of the 2 part CCNA - take the 2nd part and then move on to Security + and MCP - MCSA and then MCSE - steps - 1 at a time!!

Good luck !!

Ciscoguy,

I know I would have liked to take the tests after the class but I was working 40+ hours a week during the semester and it was hard for me to do much studying for the class. I didn’t want to take the tests at that time because I didn’t feel I could of giving it my all.

I know A+ best because I’m currently studying it, ill most likely plug away on CompTIA tests next i.e. net+ security + until I can find a job and have some help playing for the MSN tests

Glister ,

I’ll keep plugging away on my studying, sometimes it hard to stay motivated but I just have to think some day ill have a nice job and this will all have been worth it.

Thanks for the helpful info everyone

Tim,

Just keep doing it one test at a time as you can afford it and get as much practice as you can - keep your hands in it!!

Best of luck!

Thanks for all the support! I have some time off this weekend and I hope to be finishing up the hardware part of A+ studying by Monday. I plan on spending more time on the software but I hope 4 weeks will be enough, gotta try to stay on or close to my schedule

Don't forget, set goals. Such as A+ certified by the end of July, and stick to that schedule. I know it bites, as I have the same issues. Not enough time for everything, but, that is not an excuse. For my Sec +, I actually put in my test date to VUE, before I thought I was ready, to force myself to make sure I was ready. That may be something you want to do.

CiscoGuy33 has a great point. Try to do the tests as soon as you can after having the class. Reason being, you will forget, and the more you forget, the less likely you will take the tests. Seems it's human nature.

GREAT point - I know lots of people that set the exam date 1st - about a month away and that forces them (even though they could change it) to study and get ready for the exam.

I have had lots of people in my Cisco classes that said that they took the classes with us at the community college just to get structure and force them to do assignments/reading/labs because if it was not for class once a week they would not push themselves!

Like tfg13 said - set a goal and work towards it - just make sure the goal is realistic based on your time and funds!
