Entity Beans and DAO

I'm using the session bean->entity bean->DAO for the persistence mechanism in my project. However, my project manager is concerned about the overhead that entity beans bring and would like to know if the mechanism can be modified as session bean->DAO.

I would like to know, what are the extra codes that need to be inserted in the DAO objects to make up for not using entity beans ?
