Hi guys and Gals..

I loads up enterprise manager and I cant add new users or linked servers.

I am logged onto the PC as Local administrator.

Is there something I am missing. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Are you connecting to the server using Windows Authentication?
Has the BUILTIN\Administrators group still got sysadmin privelages on the SQL Server? (it has by default but may have been removed)

NO I am in enterprise Manager. Which is basically the Server.

Now If I cant change permission or do any admin tasks I cannot check your suggestions.

You still have to connect to the SQL Server from within Ent Mgr - it's just another application!

Right click on the server and choose "Edit SQL Server registration properties..." to see which authentication method you're using.

thanks mate.

I right click on the local server

and get " Only Memebers of the Sysadmin can do this"

When you right-click on the server, don't click on "Properties" (near the bottom of the context menu).

Make sure you click on "Edit SQL Server registration properties...". It's near the top of the menu.

Right that has worked ok. Thanks

I stil have the same greyed out box if I try to add a linked server or New user.

The built in admin is in the security/users group.

Any ideas ...

So when you checked the registration properties it was set to use Windows Authentication, yes?

And your Windows account has local admin privelages on the machine and the BUILTIN/Admin group is a member of the SQL Server sysadmin role?

If all this is correct then you should have sysadmin access to the SQL server and be able to do anything.

When you say you get a "greyed out box" when adding a new login, do you mean the option "New login..." on the menu is greyed out? Or do you actually get the new login detail box but all the fields are greyed out? I would expect the former if it's a permissions problem.
