Is there a feature in HiPath 4000 where the subscribers could enter the telephone extension and the name appears, but not dialing the number (the entered extension is not yet dialed). This is sort of knowing the name who owns the extension number...

No, not that I am aware of, even with digit by digit dialling setup whereby you have to hit enter to dial the name will not show up until the connection is made due to the possibility that the dialled number has diverted to another number.

Although I can't say it works on a hipath, most IP phones have a 'directory' feature.

HiPath 3000 and Openscape systems have a directory feature, I would be surprised if the 4000 did not too.

digital (non-ip) lines do not have directory features

Are you wanting this for your whole company, or just you? If just you, all I do is just dial the number and hit disconnect as soon as the name pops up. Being that it's just me this would rarely bother people, but that wouldn't be a solution for a lot of people.

Siemens/Unify has a product called DS-Win that has the ability to sync with the 4K to populate its directory information. You can then do searches on a bunch of criteria, and even dial right from the app if you have a softphone on the PC. It is licensed per active user though. I'm not sure if you could work around that by setting it up on Citrix or anything like that, but just letting you know it's out there.

DTB (Digital Telephone Book) was the original external application for this, but the keypad was an older German format and did not match up with the modern alphanumeric keypad. I did install 2 of these but found they were never used by the end users.

the idea is just to dial the number and check the name who owns it... not giving a ring on the other end so as not to bother them...

If you dial a number you will get ringing.
You could just print out the names of the extensions.
