Entering an empty date

Would anyone know how to enter a null/empty date into Access through ODBC?
My problem is I have a date field where the user can enter a date, save it, and come back later and change or remove the date. However I can't seem to get Access to accept an empty date without it crashing.

thanks for any help you can provide.
