Enter £ sign into memo field comes out as ?

I have a very basic database for an old client, and only recently we noticed that when he enters a £ sign into a memo field via the admin page, it displays on the page as a ?, even though when i go into the database to look its a £ in the field.

Strange to me, any ideas.

I think but not sure you have to enter the ascii value

or you can save the webfile using the UTF-8 encoding. That is the better way. You don't want to have ascii values in the database.
