my Red hat 6 enlightenment setup loads ontop of gnome and then when the enlightenment starting graphics
gets to 100% the whole system just stops and you have to reset.
but if you let the X console start with you in a different console it will get further then crash when you
switch to it and do anything

That's what you get for using Beta software :)

Seriously, though, I've had similar problems with Enlightenment when I've been using older or badly configured themes. Try switching to a different theme and then trying. (There's a way to do this from the command line, but I've not used E. for a long time because of problems like this.)

But it could also be caused by something else. When you say "...but if you let the X console start with you in a different console..." what do you mean, exactly? Are you talking about starting a different window manager like KDE, AfterStep, or WindowMaker?

Or are you talking about logging in from a totally different machine? If you're logging in from a different machine, then network lag may just be letting you see things that are happening too fast to see on the native system.

The first thing I'd try is using a different WM such as Afterstep or WindowMaker. If they work, then it could well be an Enlightenment theme problem.
HTH. :)
