I've looked both on this forum and Making An Impression and am surprised that no one has yet offered ghoti for discussion.

There is no doubt that English is the ghotio-est language on the face of the earth, especially when you consider that there are nearly a dozen phonemes for the four-letter string "ough".

You should try Chinese / Mandarin. The basic sound "wu" has 28 different characters & meanings. Easiest language to pun in. XiaoPing was name of former leader, protesters used to tie nooses around small bottles and hang them up. Xiao also means small and ping is also bottle.

Yes, it could sound like 'fish', if you ignore the influence of leading and trailing vowels on pronunciation.

Good Luck

For those still confused:

"gh" as in
"cough", "o" as in "women", "ti" as in "nation".

Thanks, strongm, I had no idea. My dictionary goes from ghostwriter to ghoul. After seeing your post, it still took me five minutes to figure out what the hell they were talking about with [red]FISH[/red]!

SilentAiche, you might also want to thank George Bernard Shaw, who is credited with devising ghoti as a way of showing how intuitive!! English spelling/pronunciation is.

My apologies to those that were not aware that in English, we pronounce "ghoti" as "fish" (using English's extremely non-intuitive pronunciation irregularities). Had I known that this was not as generally known as it should be, I would not have made the otherwise-inexplicable observation...

Although there is some doubt as to whether it was GBS or some unknown third party who devised the word:

BRPS, that was why I decided to play careful and include the 'credited with'.

BillyRayPreachersSon,
Could you possibly hook me up with that COOL graphic? Or tell me where I might find it? Did you make it yourself? Thank you, and have a nice day!!!
