End of sale has been announced for Magix on 4-03-06. Going to miss the old Merlin.

I heard the same.
Thery are crazy!! They are going to put themselves out of business.

Actually - it is probably good for us - a lot less competition!!

How do you figure less competition. They are going to attempt to replace it with IPO (the first System not designed by Bell Labs)and everyone is going to buy NEC or Toshiba. We make money by selling NEW systems to people not refurbished.

Ahh - OK - maybe time for you to get into the refurbished business. I suspect it will be around for a long, long time.

LOL
Maybe but what about support for the equipment from Avaya down the road.

Well - there are lots of AT&T systems out there that were manufactured over 20 years ago - and they are still ticking...and the support they get is from people like us - not Avaya. My office still has an old Merlin 1030 system - that we bought in 1984. The only thing that has gone wrong - is the need to periodically replace the CPU battery - and occasionally fix a phone.

Does this mean that after April, someone can finally post the backdoor pw for the MM r4?

Definately a pain to program when you're new to Legend/Magix, but a rock solid phone system that I love and recommend. What a bummer.

Maybe now we'll find out about the
monitor function...I would love to know what the specs
are for using it. Maybe one of the forums mvp's would impart this knowledge to us inquiring minds.

No question about it. It will be sad to see the Merlin line end in a few months time. [sad]

It would have been nice if Avaya simply stopped R&D on the Magix platform, but had Celestica continue to produce hardware, so long as there was a demand for it.

Unfortunately the face of communication is changing and it is heading, for better or for worse, towards a unified platform. At this point, the biggest selling point of VOIP seems to be inexpensive telephone service. If the taxes & fees the drive up the cost of traditional telephone service were applied to VOIP service, this whole scenario might not be happening.

At some point, VOIP systems will become as common as today's Partner ACS & Merlin Magix systems.

I like the Merlin, and think that it will be a good source of income for side jobs in the future. It will be around for at least a decade, and since no one will be factory authorised dealers, and Avaya Global services will be the only authorised service channel, Business Partners will no longer be able to get parts cheaper than all of us doing side work. Soon you will be able to purchase refurb parts for much the same price as the BP you now most probably work for.
If I am wrong about these facts let me know. Now some may have non-competes, but most BP's will be focusing on the IPO, so they may lose interest in ongoing service to equipment they can not get new parts with avaya warranty on. Every tech with Merlin experience will most probably be able to undercut a BP on labor pricing, and compete on parts pricing. If you have IPO experience, and know Merlin, it may be time come April to go independent and subcontract for IPO implementation to BP's, while competing with them for Merlin. Also, get up to speed on the IPO as BP's will need techs with product authorization to implement. Many BP's from what I hear have not entered the IPO market yet, is that true for your employers?

You do not always get what you pay for, but you never get what you do not pay for.

Check with your sales channel sources. I got an email forwarded by business partner owner from inside sales channel rep from Avaya. It is official, make no mistake. March 06 Avaya stops taking orders.

I guess there will be some fallout from the loss of the Magix platform, but exactly how much is unknown.

If there were any positives working in Avaya's favor I guess it would boil down to the fact that it is probably one of the few offshoots of the old AT&T that has fared reasonably well ever since AT&T started splitting itself apart.

AT&T (old Ma Bell):
Self destructed due to poor business decisions and had to be saved by one of its "children" SBC.

Lucent Technologies:
Stuck in quicksand and can't get out. Sales of wireline products, like the 5E are way down while the sales of wireless products are not enough to offset the poor sales of the wireline division.

Systimax:
Being bounced around like an orphan from Lucent Technologies to Avaya and now CommScope.

AT&T Consumer Telephone Division:
Handed over to VTech back in 2000 and being killed off by VTech's poor quality control as well as a general decline in consumer wireline telephone sales.

I haven't heard much about the other 2 spin-offs, NCR and Agere, to know how well they are faring.

Needless to say that 2006 will be an interesting year for Avaya.

Do you think it is good to stop the sale of something rock solid and replace it with something that is full of bugs such as the IPO?

555 Plug board, 1A2, Dimension, Horizon (well scratch the Horizon that was a POS), They all went away to make room for evolving technology now the Merlin line must do the same (unfortunately)and we will continue to support it with or without Avaya because the demand is there.

An example, the 1A2 was supported by Avaya until recently May 6 2005 was the end of contract eligibility they sent mailers to all their existing 1A2 customer base offering Partner systems at ridiculous prices. Thanks to that announcement I picked up a bunch of new customers many of which I was able to sell new or refurbished Avaya systems to, others I will maintain until they are ready to make the move.

Avaya cant possibly expect all their Merlin customers to dump these systems wholesale and migrate to new technology and they know it.

What this means for us, is new customers and possibility of new sales, in the end we will make loyal customers that will buy the IPO from us when we think the time is right for the plunge and when they buy the new system guess what we now have more parts to maintain the others with.

IMO Avaya at times still acts as though they have the same captive audience from the Bell System days.

Vince

How will that this effect the Independent contractor with Merlin, and or IPO abilities?
