We've just bought a netbook with XP Home and need the drive encrypted. very surprised to find XP home won't do this.
Does anyone know of a reliable 3rd party solution? Has to have a small footprint as it is a slightly feeble machine

EFS (Encrypting File System) is available in Windows XP Professional. A third party solution like TrueCrypt should definitley accomplish what you are after.

A poor man's solution.

See the password protection in the first article.

How to create and use compressed (zipped) folders in Windows XP

WinZip has better options for encrypting a file or folder and password protecting the encrypted folder or file.
