I noticed some time back that some code uses [ ] to enclose a string instead of '' or "". I didn't think a lot about it until I tried finding documentation on it. I can not find the use of square brackets anywhere. I checked the FAQ's here and nothing there either.

Can someone tell me where this usage is documented, or if they know all the details of such usage, please pass it on.

Thanks

Darn good question. The online help for VFP6 specifically mentions that a string expression is one delimited by single or double quote marks; it does not mention the brackets.

I've used the brackets for several years when building SQL statements that I will pass through to a database server using SQLEXEC; using the brackets makes it easier to distinguish between passed-through quotes and those used in building the expression.

Try the help file topic "Creating Character Expressions".
