Enabling Replication .... problems with .....

OK gurus - I had a post a few weeks re: replication problems - anyway I now have another major one -

If I add

log-bin
server-id=1

to my.ini and restart the server it starts creating the .bin logs - woo hoo !

Unfortunately I then cannot log into,or use mysql - I have tried at the cmd line with localhost in the connect string and also the actual IP address ..... no joy

If I comment out the log-bin lines then all is ok again (phew!) - nothing is present in the error log either ....

Any ideas what I am missing ?

I am surrounded by books and papers but am still at a loss ... ;-(
