We have a number of solaris 2.6 workstations on our network. Our servers are either NT 4 or Novell 3.2. Last year they could ftp remote sites and browse the web using netscape via our leased line. Now they can't (an IT person was "tweaking" things at the time I believe but no details available).
I'm more of a PC/novell person so what files/settings should I be looking for.
Thanks In Advance for any help

On Solaris 2.6 check the .netrc under the root directory or under the users home directory can stop ftp from remote machines. See man pages fot netrc details.

thanks but .netrc isn't on the workstation, it's unlikely that it was on and has been deleted...

Ok, here are a couple things you could check. However it would be more helpful if you would post more info about your network. Are you using nat (Network address translation)? on your network, do the sun boxes have any network access? can you telnet to ports 80 (www) or 21 (ftp)?

1) check the network settings of a system that is able to browse the internet e.g. Ip addr, netmask, gateway, dns.

2) ensure the sun box is on the same subnet as working system, and that it has the same gateway, dns. Check /etc/defaultrouter for the gateway addr or exec netstat -r, and check /etc/resolv.conf for the dns resolver.

3) Perform a traceroute to a node on the internet from a working station, then perform a traceroute from the sun box and compare the output from both traceroutes.

Post your results!

Thanks StickyBit
our default gateway had changed AND our ISP had changed it's DNSs but I had no idea where to look on the sun workstations. The files you pointed me to were just what I needed.
