I have a 1720 router v.12.0 that I tried changing the passwords on it and now I can not gain priviledged access. Before, when I telnet to the router it would default to username(user01) and password(pass01) for priviledged mode. Now when I telnet to it the login screen defaults to user mode and asks for password:
User Access Verification

Password:

I can gain access to user mode, but when I run 'enable' and it asks for username and password, I can not login.

Here is what I did:
router#config term
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
router(config)##line console 0
router(config-line)#login
router(config-line)##password newpass

router#config term
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
router(config)#line vty 0 4
router(config-line)#login
router(config-line)#password newpass

Can someone help me fix this. When making these changes I never specified a username, but I am asked for one for priv mode.

PLEASE HELP.. THANKS!!!!!!!!!
Bill

HI!

Simply search CISCO web site for "password recovery" and "1720".
Print the instructions and follow them.
Don't forget to reset the config register back to default 0x2102 when you finish.

You'll need to access the router from the CONSOLE serial cable.

Something I learned the hardway was that when I changed the passwords always save the running configuration first, change the password, log out, and try to reconnect. If you mistyped the password or for some reason cannot get in, you can simply reboot the router and use the old running config from before the password change. It saves from having to do password recovery.

If you saved the configuration then do the search for "password recovery" as Yizhar suggestion and follow the steps in the document.

I did not save the config file, does this mean I can simply reboot the router and the password changes will not take affect?

Thanks

you may need to console into the router to get a direct connection to the router, i myself also have a network of 1300 stores and our users use 1720 series routers with a 12.0 os
