Enable LCP extentions_What for?

Hi. In windows XP and 2000, when creating a dialup connection--> properties and settings you have an option to enable LCP extentions. I have a brief understanding of what LCP is in reference to PPP and stuff, but my question lies with with this option enable what does it do more or less of?
