Hi,

We have a few systems that run Old softwares - like 32 bits on 64 for ex - and i use emstat to verify that. What i miss is the way to isolate the application, i don't see a way to find which exe is running emulated commands. Maybe a trace, but then, what do i look for ???

Thanks you gurus

Hello,
Why do you care.
How much of cpu is being used in vmstat output.
If you run a application is 32 bit application and maker of application is not going to make the application 64 bit it is not going to make any difference.

hardware is 64 bit but only at AIX 5.1 both hardware and software could be 64 bit.

In the emstat output you have number that is since system start. You also have a number of emulation instruction per that instance. If the number is too high then you have to look at each application and get the application recompiled or get 64 bit version of the application.

IF CPU USAGE IS NOT VERY HIGH THEN I IGNORE EMSTAT.

you are right, but system IS often at the limit... And we have more than 200 000 (for a 4cpu S7a) emulated ins.
i've red somewhere that more than 10000/cpu was a lot...

that's why i would like to know who is running emulated ins.

Thanks

ps: what do u mean by "hardware is 64 bit but only at AIX 5.1 both hardware and software could be 64 bit"... does it mean it is useless to have 64 bits applications on a 64 bits system with aix 433 ?

Hello,
Yes and no. There are application that can make use of 64 bit hardware and it will benefit. If the application is only 32 bit application then it is not going to make use of 64 bit hardware. check with manufacture of the application.

in smitty system you can enable 64 bit application environment.

Also look at
then search on aix and 64 bit. you will find a book.

The system trace or pstat output can be looked at to see what application is doing the emulation.

Is the system firmware at the latest level and also the software at the latest level available.

thanks for your help,

Theres a lot of info in AIX 64-bot Perf in focus... i think i will find what i want in it !

thanks again
