I'm afraid I can't answer your problem but I've got it as well - I've been told it's an ActiveX problem with IE5.5 - the PDF brochures on our website load some pages and leave others blank or partly load pages, so there's bits missing.
I've also had "file i/o output" error messages.
I've created a PDF and I can display it in my IE5.5, maybe it's because I've installed Adobe Distiller 5.0. I've tried using older versions like 3.0 and it can display the PDF I've put in the intranet.
However, when I tested it on 4.0, there's and error: "Read less data" etc... Then the loading is slow or the PC hangs.
Is it because I've put in the encryption level (48-bit,3.X,4.X) so that the user can't print? If so why did Adobe 3.0 could display it in the IE?
I would think that when the PDF files are created you need to take into account who is going to view them and which version of the reader is being used.
Cause you can use Acrobat 5 to create Pdf files that are complate with version 3 reader. If you can't fix it in 20 call someone who can.
I have a feeling that Microsoft have done something with the plug-in for Adobe Acrobat in the Service Pack 2. I've only just upgraded to IE 5.5 SP2 and already I've had to change all my web pages that contain embedded quicktime, and now my PDF links are not working.
I haven't found anything concrete out yet, but I need to fix the PDFs asap.
Adobe 5 seems to work with PDFs initially, but if your PDF document attempts to load another PDF, then you appear to run into more problems and more errors. I think it has to do with plug-ins loading other plug-ins, but I don't really know.
I have IE5.5,SP2, and can't open a pdf document within it. When I reverted to IE5.0 it worked fine, but not in 5.5. Is this related to the info in DomPedro's link, having to do with version 5.5 no longer treating Adobe Acrobat reader as a plug-in? The link says that the problem is caused by the URI not ending in "pdf". DomPedro's link says that a netrwork administrators can resolve the problem by configuring their web server to send a content-type header (MIME type) of "application/pdf" for .pdf files. BUT...IE5.5 worked OK with my pdf files for a while, and now it doesn't. So....does anyone have a solution to this???? Someone from Microsoft, someone from Adobe??
