If DELETED is ON you even have to count, eg COUNT FOR !DELETED("aliasname") TO lnReccount.
It will also differ, if you use other record source types, of course.

Also, it depends on what you mean by "empty". A grid will appear to be "empty" if the RecordSource has not yet been set. So that's something else you might need to test for.
