i'm relatively new to emc environment. Can anyone tell me what is the function of the LUN (Logical Unit) for and why we need to create a lun?

A LUN is a Logical Unit Number. A LUN is a part of the disk array you have carved out. It is used to determine the device on the BUS of the HBA. It is like assigning a SCSI ID to a disk.

When you create a RAID Group, the disks have to be carved into LUNS to present to the host.
