I would like to know why the EMC file systems did not mount after I made a change in the fstab to add the parameter _netdev to the EMC file systems in fstab and restarted the system . I had to mount the EMC file systems

Here are the var/log/messages after reboot

kernel: emcp: module license 'unspecified' taints kernel.
kernel: Info:emcp:Received add upcall for index 0x0 devno 0x800000
kernel: Info:emcp:Successfully setup scsi disk class driver block device open/release/ioctl traps = 0x880ac8e0

qdiskd[5418]: <info> Quorum Partition: /dev/emcpowerb1 Label: nbl_qdisk
EMCPP: emcpAudit: Info: cmd=powermt: save (user ID real=0 effective=0)

Then I manually mount the EMC file systems

manually mounted the emc file systems
mount /oradb1d1
mount /oradb1d2
mount /oradb1d3
mount /oradb1d4

oradb1 to 4 are on EMC 1 to 5

Log after mount :
: EXT3 FS on emcpowera1, internal journal
: EXT3 FS on emcpowera2, internal journal
: EXT3 FS on emcpowera3, internal journal
: EXT3 FS on emcpowera5, internal journal

How do i find out is these file systems mounted on boot prior to the _netdev change

Can you show us the contents of your /etc/fstab?

This is to easy, you added _netdev to /etc/fstab. This tells the o/s not to mount until network is available. The standard mounts are done before network, so these should not have been mounted. Unless you added a mount -a in your /etc/rc.local which is usually called after the network is up.

So u saying once the network is up , it should mount automatically ?
Coz in my case I had to type in #mount filesystem
after some time when I realised the EMC filesystems are not up even after a long time after the boot up .

No, what I meant to say was it will not mount unless you add another mount -a after the network is up in the start up scripts.

chgwhat, Thank You
That makes sense to include it in the rc.local
However, I also realised that the fstab needs to be tab delimited.
I had spaces in mine ... which could have caused the mounting issues.

Spaces or tabs shouldn't matter in fstab.

You do not need 'mount -a' in your /etc/rc.local in order for filesystems mounted with _netdev in /etc/fstab to mount automatically. Adding 'mount -a' to rc.local is the equivalent of mounting them manually. I'm not saying it won't work, but you have another issue going on that is preventing them from mounting. Let's see your /etc/fstab file. The _netdev option will automatically mount the filesystems but it waits until /etc/init.d/network completes. If I have to guess without seeing what you've actually done, I'll say that you added "defaults,_netdev" which would be wrong, drop the defaults if you did that.
